Does anyone have mobile DVD player they like for the backseats? Our kids are 2 and 4 and although they travel well, they don’t sleep.. Short of dosing them with gravol we are looking for something to take the edge off after the eighth hour or so..

I’ve had a Toshiba and a Philips. The Philips seemed to stand up to more abuse, which is really what you may want to prioritize.

our 2 and 4 year olds don’t mind sharing a single video most of the time. I wouldn’t do DVD because you could get a nice used tab for the price of one quality dvd player. pro tip? presents. Do small little gifts at regular intervals to help them mitigate the passage of time. Silly putty, coloring books, stuff like that. It really helps.

ipads. my kids both have our old gen1 ipads. play movies, play games. far more entertaining than just a dvd. My kids rarely watch a movie the whole way through.

We do; presents, books, hotwheels (Yes!), Magnadoodles, Boogieboards, stickers, snacks, stops...

So far we’ve successfully avoided having screens but we’ve got three 8+hr trips scheduled this summer and we’re looking at all our options.

Yeah, we’ve got iphones and an ipad in the house, thing is we’re out of service most of the way so they would need to be offline. I know lots of little kids already have their own phones/ipads - I’m not ready to cross that hurdle yet.

That’s a long trip. I did one very long (16 hours of driving) trip in 2014 with three kids under 8. Something that worked great, Redbox. Pick ‘em up anywhere, drop ‘em off anywhere. Very convenient. I was spreading disks across the entire Eastern seaboard.

21 damn dollars?! nuts to that, buy the little 3 mg pills and cut them up into 1 mg dosages. btw, I have used melatonin and while it puts them to sleep they always seem to wake up at like 4am when I do. Not worth it for my kids.

good for you, I wont let my kids play with my phone, though they do play with the tablet on their own from time to time. Mostly I use it for movies wedged between the front seat so they can both see it/not touch it.

We’re lining up our summer trips this week;

In June we are heading out to Tofino/LongBeach/Ucluelet

Kinja'd!!!

It’s only about 600km (370mi) but goes through the heart of the lower mainland and across the ferry to Vancouver island so travel time is 9+hrs.

Then in July we are doing our annual trek to the Grandparent’s Farm in Fairview Alberta;

Kinja'd!!!

If we do it in one day it’s an 11hr grind - almost 1000kms (620mi) - we split it up last year but it was almost as bad getting everyone into the hotel at the end of one day and then packed up and back on the road the next morning..

Sometime in August we’ll be hitting the lake with my sisters family in our trailers -

Kinja'd!!!

It’s only around 200kms (125mi) but the Tacoma’s will both be pulling 5000lbs loaded so it takes awhile to get anywhere lol.

I just bought a Kindle fire tablet for $40, you could buy two of them, and just put some movie files on a micro SD card and throw it in there. Two of those might be less than you would spend for a two screen DVD player. We used a Phillips one for a while and it was fine.

Sounds fun. We are booking our campsites for yellowstone this summer (yellowstone in the summer...I know) and my and my oldest are driving the white rim at the end of this month, but thats it so far. I would like to do great basin NP again and maybe a few fall trips to zion or capitol reef. Everywhere is 4 hours from salt lake.

I put videos on ipad ipod and they can be watched offline.

plus they have all their fisherprice apps too.

I let my 2 year old play with the ipad for 30 min per day. I have to limit her, she would be on it all day if not.

Buy a cheap android tablet with a micro SD slot for additional memory, download a bunch of free games, put a bunch of movies/TV on the SD card, and make sure there is no CC associated with any of it. Done.

Oh and don’t forget the charger. Never forget the charger!

ETA: I know with Prime you can download movies to a tablet for when you don’t have data (I have a wi-fi only iPad so this is helpful)

We had one similar to this:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-PD9012…

This was one of the best roadtrip purchases we ever made. How far is it to grandma’s? You can watch Cars, Shrek, Dinotopia, and The Incredible Journey, all before we get there! We also get to play the license plate game, the alphabet game....

Having two screens with one player taught the kids something about compromise and also encouraged them to take breaks - when our daughter wanted to watch Cinderella, our son decided it was a good idea to read or color.

In my day it was called “staring out the window.” The original moving pictures.

Kids these days.

Get off my lawn.

I busted out a Nintendo DS a couple months ago, I played it a bit, and my 3 year old boy never wants to put it down.

My daughter only wants it so he can’t have it.

If we got an over the seat DVD player they’d both be content on a trip. I intended to borrow one for our trip in May.

Unless I buy a car with one before then.

haha, good one - that works for the first 5 hours, then it doesn’t..

And trust me I’ve had the, “you live in an amazing part of the country, those trees took 100 years to get that big, those mountains took thousands of years dinosaurs used to walk over them, people come from all over the world to see what’s out your window, isn’t that amazing?”

“no, Pawpatrol is amazing.”

We have an older model Sylvania. Still works well and we have done several 16 hour one-way trips with it.

don’t be so anti phone, depending on the age of your kids there are great educational apps out there! As long as they’re not glued to it not stop I don’t have a problem with my son using it.

He has an Amazon Kindle Fire Kids edition which I sideloaded some movies/tv shows on to for him. (I thought it was insane for him to have his own tablet, I really did, but my in laws bought it because we travel a lot - that thing is freaking awesome)

We still have a set of those. We found d it so useful for trips they rarely came out after a while. So much so that we bought our second and third vehicles with built in ones.

im not anti tech, just anti-reliance on tech. They don’t have their own stuff and they wont for many years but they know how to use it and we let them use it with kids mode on. though I prefer to be there with them when they do.
